Kid sized carving gloves. 
These provide excellent slash resistance and a good grip on the project thanks to the rubberized dots.  Sold as individual gloves for the hand that will be holding the carving.  Right handed carvers need a left handed glove.  (In Rick's carving classes for kids, compulsory use of these gloves has DRAMATICALLY reduced the application of bandaids to little fingers.)
