Summer Fun With A
Pocketknife

WOODCARVING FOR KIDS
Purpose:
To teach children, ages 9-12 how to safely use a pocketknife to produce
simply whittled projects out of commonly available materials for their own
enjoyment.
WARNING: Whittling is very habit forming.
Participation in these classes could lead to a lifetime hobby.
Time:
6 hours
Approach:
- Demonstration, instruction, and then
hands on practice for the students with assistance from the instructor.
Session one:
- Learn safe knife handling.
- Learn and practice basic knife strokes.
- Make a decorative and useful wooden
pen.
- Make a rubber band shooter.
(Environmentally sensitive insect control system.)
Session two:
- Begin to make a boomerang. (Yes it
really returns!).
- Learn to sharpen.
Session three:
- Make a sturdy and functional walking
stick
- Finish any projects begun and not
finished yet.
- Work on other projects if time permits
Students who have had some experience can
do more advanced projects.
Tools and materials are provided for the
classes at no extra cost.
Knives and sharpening equipment are
available for sale.
Instructor's Fee:
- $55.00 per student plus GST

SUMMER FUN WITH A
POCKETKNIFE
Purpose: To teach kids ages 9-12,
how to safely use a pocketknife to produce simply whittled toys for
themselves and others, and to really enjoy themselves in the process.
WARNING: Whittling is very habit forming.
This could lead to a lifetime hobby.
Time: 4 or 5 days, 2 hours per day
Approach:
- Demonstration, instruction, and then
hands on making of projects with assistance.
- All materials and tools needed for the
course are provided at no extra cost.
Day one:
- Learn basic knife handling and safety.
- Learn basic knife strokes and practice
them on scrap wood.
- Make a twig pen that really writes.
- Make a rubber band shooter - an
"environmentally sensitive insect control system."
Day two:
- Make slip bark wooden whistles during
July and early August.
- Learn how to sharpen a knife and keep
it sharp.
- Make a working boomerang. (Yes it
really comes back!)
Day three:
- Make a flying, non-electric helicopter
out of wood and/or a sturdy and functional hiking staff
Day four:
- Make a space shuttle type airplane. Its
fast, it's fun and it really flies well!
Every day:
- See the teacher make and give away
really neat woodcarvings.
- Knives and sharpening equipment offered
for sale.

Class Size:
- Minimum of 5 students and a maximum of
15.
